Sudin Bhattacharya (PI)

Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacology & Toxicology, IQ,

Sudin grew up in Kolkata, India, and did his BS, MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He switched to computational biology and toxicology as a post-doc. Outside of work, he can often be found at a local café or hanging out with his two cats.

Leah Terrian, PhD Student,

Biomedical Engineering

Leah was born and raised in Saginaw, MI and earned her B.S. in Mathematics with minors in Physics and Business from Lee University in 2019. Her many research interests include computational modeling, bioelectricity, and irreversible electroporation as a cancer ablation method. Leah started a PhD program in Biomedical Engineering at Michigan State in Fall 2020. Outside of research, she enjoys rollerblading, bonfires, and baking.

Derek Bowman, DO / PhD Student,

Pharmacology & Toxicology, College of Osteopathic Medicine

Derek was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and went to Michigan State University for his undergraduate degree in Human Biology. He then completed his Master of Science in Medical Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine, Division of Graduate Medical Sciences.  Derek returned to Michigan State for medical school in June of 2021, completing two years of medical school before transitioning to the PhD program in Pharmacology & Toxicology in Fall 2023. In the future, Derek hopes to work as a physician-scientist in nephrology or critical care medicine, applying and developing computational methods to advance patient care. Outside of medicine and research, Derek enjoys exercising, playing and listening to music, and tinkering with his 3D printer. Go Green!

Samia Islam, PhD Student,

Computer Science and Engineering

Samia Islam

Samia Islam is a PhD student in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Michigan State University, where she began her doctoral studies in Fall 2023. Samia was born and raised in Bangladesh. She earned her BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology. Her research focuses on Dynamical Systems in Single-Cell Genomics, with interests spanning Non-Linear Dynamics, Single-Cell Analysis, Deep Learning, and Machine Learning. Outside academia, Samia enjoys cooking, playing board games, spending quality time with friends, and roaming around, especially at midnight.

Jackson Kubal, PhD Student,

Cell and Molecular Biology

Jackson completed his BS in Cell and Molecular Biology at San Diego State University. While completing his degree he also worked in multiple molecular biology labs, with research focuses ranging from RNA regulation in Cystic Fibrosis to cranberry genomics. His breadth of experience exposed him to a plethora of current problems in biology and motivated him to answer the following question : how do single cells make decisions and how do their individual decisions manage to scale into an embodied collective cellular intelligence. With this in mind, Jackson decided to pursue a PhD at Michigan State, where he now uses computational tools to work on building models that give us mechanistic insight into how single cells process information to make decisions and cooperate.

Anahita Dhar, Undergraduate Student,

Neuroscience, CMSE

Anahita was born in India and moved to Ghana at the age of 8 before eventually pursuing her undergraduate studies at Michigan State University. She is currently conducting volunteer research in the Bhattacharya lab, focusing on the use of single-cell RNA sequencing and computational tools like scVelo. Passionate about integrating computational biology with health science, Anahita is a Neuroscience major with a minor in CMSE. Outside of research, she enjoys reading, watching movies and exploring new cultures. She is excited to delve further into the lab and learn more skills!
